The Energy of Taiwan: Accommodate All the Rivers, Look beyond the Continents
The Unfailing Energy
Artist TSENG, Ying-Tung has been inspired by energy in recent years. To him, two elements “love” and “money” characterize the most valuable assets in the intangible world and the dominating energy in the tangible world respectively. In this artwork, the shape of heart is the corresponding symbol of love. Likewise, money is represented by the marks of ancient coins, round outside and square inside.
TSENG employs Paper mache (Papier-mâché) and sand to construct the base and the shape of this artwork, with the solid and uneven texture mirroring the essence of time. The silhouette of Tamsui River Mouth and the north coast of Taiwan reminds us of Tamsui Port’s prosperity in the late 19th century when businessmen and merchant houses clustered together to conduct international trade. However, not only is this artwork nostalgic, but it also shows the prospect of Taiwan’s open mind by accommodating all the rivers figuratively.
With the technique of washes ink painting, TSENG colors the artwork with oil-painting, layer after layer. The eye in the center of this artwork is composed of the horizontal outline of Taiwan and the shape of an ancient coin. Looking beyond the continents, the eye suggests Taiwan’s eagerness and ability to advance continuously in the fast-changing world nowadays.
The final touch of gold foil derives from the craftsmanship of decorating Buddha’s figures and Buddhist temples. Hence, the artwork presents itself in a plain yet splendid way, sparkling with the Energy of Taiwan.
