The Messages behind the Artwork of Leo Lionni, Renowned Author of Children's Books
Leo Lionni was a leading figure in children’s picture book, known for his many award-winning titles, including Little Blue and Little Yellow, Swimmy, and Alexander and the Wind-Up Mouse, which latter two are featured in elementary school textbooks in Japan. Throughout his life, he was involved in a wide range of creativity, such as graphic design, art direction, and the production of children’s books.
Among his varied working experiences, this exhibition will highlight the works on the children’s books that Lionni began creating at the age of 49. We will showcase the diverse techniques that he employed with his characteristic flair, especially on paper collages for example, which developed from his practice and vision as an art director. In addition to the original works from his children’s books, the exhibition will also feature exclusive moving image and other contents, offering visitors a chance to explore Lionni’s worldview in various ways.
