Yasuhiro Suzuki Discovery Now Under Way

Sat. July 20 - Sun. September 1, 2024
Venue: Futako Tamagawa Rise Studio & Hall

Open contemporary art, to discover together with the audiences

Artist Yasuhiro Suzuki (1979-) creates artwork by focusing on mundane things around us and re-evaluates with his unique perspectives. Changing circumstance of the work, viewer’s perspective, and their discoveries add spice to his humorous works, lending them a new look on each occasion.

The exhibition showcases approx. 50 art works , including Suzuki’s masterpieces, Blinking Leaves and Aerial Being. These works were produced by Suzuki’s mitate (resembling), his original approach of associating one thing to another and reinterpret with a fresh perspective based on his sensitive insight and innovative ideas. Each person makes their own unique realizations and discoveries to an identical work of art. Would be quite interesting to observe a chain of Suzuki’s artwork created by his own “discoveries,” audience who makes a new “discovery” viewing the work, and another visitor nearby reckoning that from a different perspective and makes their own “discoveries!”

As clues to these “discoveries,” the exhibition is constructed to enjoy the works by viewing as well as experiencing. This exhibition organized by The Bunkamura Museum of Art in Futakotamagawa, a place brimming with culture and nature, invites you to the joy of ongoing "discoveries."

What’s mitate?

Have you ever found yourself staring at the ceiling at night when you couldn’t sleep, then the grain of wood started to resemble something different, like a human face or a ghost? This kind of recognition, where you see one thing as something else, moreover to express one thing by replacing it with something else, is called “mitate” or “resembling.” For example, Constellation of Apples is a work in which the speckles on the apples are compared to night stars. This process of shift in thinking is one of Suzuki’s important sources of creativity.
