11:00‐20:00 (Last Admission: 19:30)

“The one nice thing about photography, it teaches you to look.
It teaches you to appreciate all kinds of things.” -
Saul Leiter

The Bunkamura Museum of Art has previously held two exhibitions of Saul Leiterʹs work, which instantly made the name of this photographer, who had virtually been unknown in Japan, renowned, attracting so much attention that expressions like "Saul Leiter-ish photos" came into common use in the country.

Celebrating the 100th anniversary of his birth, The Bunkamura Museum of Art is to host this exhibition at Hikarie Hall, as all Bunkamura facilities other than the Orchard Hall were closed in April 2023.

After stepping away from the limelight in his 50s and just staying true to his own aesthetics, rather than showing any interest in fame and fortune, Saul Leiter came under the spotlight again in his 80s in 2006, when his first photograph collection "Early Color" was published by Steidl, the German publisher that has always captivated photography fans worldwide.

As of his death in 2013, his numerous works remained unorganized, including tens of thousands of color slides, but they began to be organized into an achive database by the Saul Leiter Foundation, which was established in the following year. Despite the fact that he has already passed away, Saul Leiter can be said to be "an artist in progress" in the sense that new discoveries are constantly being made about his works.

Through over 400 works, including the latest ones, such as large-scale color slide projections featuring recently discovered works, and never-before-seen black-and-white photos and pictures, this exhibition aims to reveal lesser-known aspects of Saul Leiter and delves into the source of his amazing sense of color that has kept the world mesmerized and has earned him the title of "a pioneer in the art of color photography."
