This extensive exhibition celebrates the 90th anniversary of his birth.

Colombian artist Fernando Botero (1932–) has been highly acclaimed in Europe and the U.S. since the late 1950s, and is known today as one of the most iconic figures in contemporary art. Botero began gaining attention in 1963—the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York had Leonardo da Vinci's Mona Lisa on display this year, while the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA; a veritable hall of fame in the world of contemporary art) exhibited Botero's Mona Lisa, Age Twelve (not on display at this exhibition) in its entrance hall.

The defining characteristic of Botero's works is that all their forms and shapes are depicted with extensive volume. He invokes a regular motif of giving exaggerated proportions to humans and other animals, making fruit look almost ripe as if to burst, and even bringing plumpness to the musical instruments and daily necessities shown in his works. By giving volume to his subjects, he instills them with a complex semiotic mixture that is at once sensual, humorous, and ironic, bringing a multitude of emotions to the viewer. This style serves as Botero's own form of magic that continues to attract the attention of people worldwide.

Large-scale exhibitions of Botero's works have been held in South America, Europe, North America, and Asia, garnering global appeal. This is the first time in 26 years that an exhibition of his works has come to Japan, and it is taking place in an auspicious year as 2022 marks the 90th anniversary of his birth. With the supervision of Botero himself, this exhibition presents a total of 70 works including oil paintings, watercolors and drawings ranging from his early creations to his recent art, and it is sure to bring valuable opportunities for new encounters with Botero and his signature "Boterismo" style.
