Presenting the Masterpieces of Danish Design
Hans J. Wegner(1914-2007) is widely regarded as a pivotal figure in 20th-century furniture design, with an influence that extends far beyond Danish mid-century modernism. Among his most iconic works, "The Chair"(1949) and the "Wishbone Chair(Y-Chair)"(1950) are widely loved and instantly recognizable. A cabinetmaker of exceptional talent and profound insights into materials, Wegner produced more than 500 chairs over his lifetime.
This exhibition marks a major retrospective of Wegner's work, unprecedented in scale within Japan. It was made possible through the cooperation of the town of Higashikawa in Hokkaido, which is home to the collection of world-renowned chair scholar and modern-furniture collector Noritsugu Oda. Around 160 chairs, together with other furnishings, are gathered together. What is the enduring appeal of Wegner, a master of the design world whose work remains beloved today? The exhibition design is by internationally acclaimed architect Tsuyoshi Tane(ATTA). The exhibition looks back on Wegner's achievements and design philosophy through a rich selection of works and related archival materials.
