Shibuya is the home of the Tokyu Group. It is one of the dynamic cultural centers of modern Japan. As part of its contribution to the development of Shibuya, the Tokyu Group has implemented a vigorous programme of renovation along Bunkamura-dori (formerly Tokyu Honten-dori) by opening a series of new shops, one after another: “109 (Ichi Maru Kyu)”, “One Oh Nine”, “One Oh Nine 30’s” and “109 (Ichi Maru Kyu) Part II”. A major landmark in this ongoing effort was the completion, in September 1989, of Bunkamura. A multi-cultural facility without parallel, Bunkamura represents the Tokyu Group’s answer to the challenge we all face in an age of changing values, where the emphasis is shifting from material affluence to greater spiritual and intellectual fulfillment.

Bunkamura is the first and largest multi-cultural complex of its kind in Japan. As well as providing settings for music, theatre, the fine arts and cinema, Bunkamura takes pride in its fine dining and shopping. Patrons can also take advantage of the many amenities offered by the adjacent Tokyu Department Store.
“Bunkamura will not be simply another retail business. By encouraging culture and creativity, it will make a real contribution to the Shibuya community.” This is the aspiration of the entire Tokyu Group for Bunkamura, an aspiration which has been consistently fulfilled since Bunkamura first opened its doors.
