| Eight months after their first visit to Japan with the performance
of "The Car Man", we are thrilled to welcome AMP again with the gifted
Matthew Bourne's production of the SWAN LAKE! |
| Following their debut in Japan with the Olivier awarded performance
"THE CAR MAN", Adventures in Motion Picture (AMP) will be visiting Japan
again with the production of the SWAN LAKE. The long-awaited reincarnation of
Tchaikofsky's classic, which will be presented in February 2003, in Bunkamura
Orchard Hall.
Brilliant British choreographer Matthew Bourne turns tradition upside down
with a new spin on SWAN LAKE by resetting the scene in a imaginative '50s London
and a court of libidinous Royals, and by replacing the traditional female corps
of leggy, tutued swans with a menacing (threatening) flock of bare-chested males.
Since November 9th, 1995 with the Sadler's Wells (London) world premiere performance,
SWAN LAKE has twice toured the UK, has become the longest running ballet in the
West End and has thrilled audiences in LA. The production has been widely acclaimed
on both sides of the Atlantic as a landmark production on the international stage
and has collected over 25 international theatre awards, including 3 Tony's for
the Broadway production.
Bourne's SWAN LAKE tells the story of an unloved prince, a cold, heartless
mother, an unsuitable girlfriend and a flock of menacing and mysterious swans,
led by a haunting and sinister figure - the swan of the prince's dreams.
But do not be muddled up! This is a serious, probing (inquisitive) theatrical
production, despite considerable wit and moments of parody.

| With its full corps de ballet of male swans, AMP's Swan Lake
immediately captured consciousness, astonishing both audiences and critics alike.
But what makes this re-interpretation different is not only limited to the
casting of the swans. The swans apart from having painted birdlike foreheads and
feathered pantaloons, they have an erotic but also dangerous and destructive aura.
The setting has been set to a distinctly recognizable London, in 1950 era.
Matthew Bourne's dynamic choreography brilliantly transforms the traditional
Tschaikofsky's masterpiece SWAN LAKE into a hugely entertaining contemporary tale.
This multi award-winning production is surrounded by brilliant scenes, perfect
choreography and exceptional dancing.

The Synopsis of Bourne's Swan Lake
｢STORY｣ |
| A young prince leads a lonely existence when his mother won't
show him the slightest bit of affection. ［The Bourne version begins with a prologue
in which we first meet the Prince as a young boy. In the remainder of the first
act, we see the Prince grow, attempting to adjust to being part of a Royal Family］.
While the Prince is struggling with issues of separation and individuation,
sexual identity and self-realization, the queen's secretary sets him up with a
whorish girlfriend. After a scene played out in a swanky bar, the drunken prince
writes a suicide note and prepares to drown his sorrows--literally.
His attempt is subverted by The Swan that emerges from the water. The Prince
recognizes the Swan from his dreams and is instantly attracted to him. Other swans
seem to threaten him and the Swan, that controls them and protects the Prince,
becomes his soul mate and his reason to live. For the Prince, the bird is fascinating,
free, powerful -- everything he aspires to be. A magnificent man-bird that can
simultaneously hold him like a child and soothe his mature urges.
In the second act, the Prince recognizes an intruder at a party in the Royal
Palace that resembles his Swan. The events that follow result in the accidental
death of the Prince's Girlfriend.
For the Prince and his real love - the Swan, redemption comes through death.
In the final scene the swans appear yet again, this time bringing with them a
brutal denouement (end). The Prince then dies of complete despair.
This is a story where betrayal and power are conquered by the virtues of love
and forgiveness. A truly universal romance and tragedy of death and loss, but
more importantly of re-birth that makes non-judgmental and unconditional love
possible. |
| PRINCE SIEGFRIED: The Young Prince 14years old. The older Prince
21 years old. The prince is weak and not suited for royal life. A dreamer, he
leads a double life and is obsessed since childhood with visions of swans. He
has a strong almost incestuous relationship with his mother (queen) and he is
jealous of her young lovers.
The QUEEN: At 45, the Queen is middle aged but still retains her beauty and
allure. She is single and entertains various young lovers. She is however, dignified
and supremely royal. Her son is an embarrassment.
The SWAN: A creature of imagination. He is strong, masculine and beautiful.
To the Prince he represents freedom and peace as well as desire.
VON ROTHBART: He is the Prince's Press Secretary - devious, slimy and corrupt.
OTHER CHARACTERS: Swans, cygnets, princesses, maids, the Prince commoner girlfriend,
the Queen's escorts, members of a private Soho Club, East End gangsters, sailors,
prostitutes. |
| The most talked about innovation in AMP's Swan Lake is the
casting of a male dancer in the converted role of Odette/Odile, which Bourne simple
called "the Swan". Indeed, all swans in this production are male dancers,
departing from convention in such a radical way. |
| "The idea of a male swan makes complete sense to me, the
strength, the beauty, the enormous wingspan of these creatures suggests the musculature
of a male dancer (much more readily than a ballerina in a white tutu). By using
men, you are wiping away all those mental pictures in the audience's mind and
freeing up their imagination, ready to experience something new."
"The Swan represents to the Prince everything he wants to be; strong,
beautiful and free. He is kind of alter ego that reflects the mood or state that
the Prince is feeling. Their relationship does, however, have a very erotic charge

 ２００２年、「ザ・カー・マン」をひっさげて初来日を果した、ロンドンの超人気ダンスカンパニー、アドベンチャーズ・イン・モーション・ピクチャーズ（ＡＭＰ）が、ついにあの大ヒット作「白鳥の湖」をもって、２００３年２月、待望の再来日を果たす。
ＡＭＰは、１９８７年、振付・演出家マシュー・ボーンを中心に結成され、映画からインスピレーションを受けた独創的なバレエに人気が集まり、「くるみ割り人形」(1992)、「ハイランド・フリング」(1994)など、古典バレエの新演出で好評を得、「白鳥の湖」（1995）で一気にその名を全世界に知らしめた。
「白鳥の湖」は、1995年11月9日ロンドンのサドラーズ・ウェルズ劇場にて世界初演、初日が開いて２，３日もすると、公演チケットはすべて売り切れ、凱旋公演として1996年9月11日にピカデリー劇場にてウエストエンド進出するや、チケットは瞬く間に売りきれ、バレエ史上初の４ケ月公演という快挙を成し遂げた。その後、1998年10月8日にはバレエ作品としては異例のブロードウェイ進出（ニール・サイモン劇場）を果たし、大成功を収めて全世界に衝撃を与えた。
同作品は、1999年度トニー賞において、最優秀ミュージカル演出賞、振付賞、衣裳デザイン賞の３冠に輝いた他、ローレンス・オリヴィエ賞など国際的な賞を２５以上受賞した。
また、近年公開された大ヒット映画「リトル・ダンサー」のラストシーンで、主人公の少年が成長した姿として、舞台のワンシーンが再現され、大きな感動を呼んだのも記憶に新しいだろう。 |

 クラシックバレエ作品の中でも最も有名な「白鳥の湖」が、鬼才マシュー・ボーンの手で全く新しい作品に生まれ変わった。
チュチュをまとった可憐な女性ではなく、男性が白鳥を踊るという衝撃のアイディアは、チャイコフスキーの音楽が持つ力強さから連想したというボーン。
自由奔放でワイルドな白鳥は、自分の行動や将来を抑制された王子にとって、憧憬してやまない存在。王子は、彼のようになりたいと思うと同時に彼に惹かれながらも、そうした自分の本心に向き合えず、やがて…。

| 東京バレエ団プリンシパルダンサー首藤康之の出演が、マシュー・ボーンの指名により決定した。ベジャール、ノイマイヤー、キリアンなど名だたる振付家の作品の数々を踊り、また「ニジンスキー」で演劇に挑戦するなど、テクニック、表現力ともにダンサーとして最高の時期を迎えている彼が、いかなる「白鳥」を演じるのか、これはファンならずとも必見。 |
大分で９歳からバレエを始め、１５歳で東京バレエ団に入団。
１９９０年、弱冠１９歳で『眠れる森の美女』に主演。'９２年のロシア／ウクライナ公演では『ラ・シルフィード』のジェームズ役をボリショイ劇場、マリインスキー劇場で踊り、輝かしい成功を収めた。
'９４年６月に初演された『パーフェクト・コンセプション』ではイリ・キリアンから直接振付を受ける機会に恵まれ、キリアンの創作意欲をかきたてる存在として作品の成功に大きく貢献した。また同年８月には『白鳥の湖』のジークフリート王子を踊る。'９５年３月から４月にかけてベジャールに請われ、ベジャール・バレエ団ヨーロッパ公演に客演し『リア王−プロスペロー』他に出演、各地で好評を博した。
'９６年２月には東京バレエ団初演の『ペトルーシュカ』、『ボレロ』、『春の祭典』を踊り、"熟練した色気のあるダンサー""希有なアクター・ダンサー"との賛辞を呈された。
'９８年７月に初演されたベジャール振付の『M』では、ベジャールの指名により聖セバスチャンを演じ、日本人離れした柔軟で表現力に富んだ踊りで、一躍人気を集め、新境地を開く。続く海外公演でも『M』の聖セバスチャン、『ボレロ』、『春の祭典』を踊り、客席を熱狂の渦に巻き込んだ。'９９年は、ベジャール振付『くるみ割り人形』日本初演で"Ｍ…"役を強烈な存在感を持って踊り、高い評価を受けた。そのほか、『ジゼル』のアルブレヒトと、アロンソ振付『カルメン』のホセを初披露し好評を得た。

ＡＭＰの創立メンバーで、１９８７年より芸術監督および振付家を務めている。
「白鳥の湖」の演出・振付で一気に大ブレイク、ロンドン・ウエストエンドとニューヨーク・ブロードウェイに進出、バレエ作品としては異例の大成功を収めた。この作品で、彼は１９９９年度トニー賞最優秀振付賞および最優秀演出賞の２冠、ならびにローレンス・オリヴィエ賞などをはじめ、２５を超える国際的な賞に輝いた。演劇性が高く、エンターテインメント性に富んだ作品を得意としている。
彼の手がけた主な作品として、「くるみ割り人形」(1992)、「ハイランド・フリング」(1994)、「シンデレラ」（1997）など、もうすっかりおなじみになった古典バレエの新演出や、「スピットファイア」(1988)、「デドリー・シーリアス」(1992)などのコンテンポラリー・ダンスなどがある。ミュージカルの振付でも抜群の人気を誇っており、リバイバル版「オリヴァー！」（1994〜97 UKツアー）、ロンドンで２００１年３月に開幕した、連日超満員で前売完売の超人気ミュージカル、キャメロン・マッキントッシュ製作、トレヴァー・ナン演出の「マイ･フェア･レディ」の振付を、最近では、ナンと再びコンビを組み、「南太平洋」を手がけている。第２６回ローレンス・オリヴィエ賞において、ボーンは「マイ・フェア・レディ」の振付で最優秀賞を受賞している。
 その他、演劇界においてもその活躍は目ざましく、「お気に召すまま」（ロイヤル・シェイクスピア・カンパニー／１９８９）、「真夏の夜の夢」「エクサン＝プロヴァンス音楽祭／１９９１、イングリッシュ・ナショナル・オペラ／１９９５」、１９９４年にバービカン劇場で上演された、蜷川幸雄演出「ペール・ギュント」でも振付を担当している。なおＡＭＰが２００２年４月に待望の初来日を果した際の話題作、「ザ・カー・マン」は、２０００年９月、ロンドンのオールド・ヴィック劇場で幕を開け、その後、イブニング・スタンダード賞において
最優秀ミュージカルを受賞している。
今後は、新演出の「くるみ割り人形」を、今年１１月にロンドンのサドラーズ・ウェルズ劇場で初演する予定である。 |
