Paddington Bear™

Sat. April 28 - Mon. June 25, 2018
* May 8 & June 5 Closed

A close-up look at Paddington Bear, who is loved all over the world, through various rare documents that include original drawings and illustrations from children’s picture books!

The first book of the “Paddington” series, one of England’s most famous series of children’s books, was created by Michael Bond in 1958. It became extremely popular around the world, was translated into and published in over 40 different languages, and went on to have picture books, animations, movies, plush toys and made much more in its name.
The main character of the series is a little bear from Peru, who came to England all alone. He meets Mr. and Mrs. Brown at London’s Paddington Station, and the couple name him after the station and take him home to be part of their family. The story of this very polite bear getting into every predicament under the sun and becoming a popular member of the neighborhood is full of Michael Bond's gentle prose, and also his wishes for peace.
This exhibition commemorates Mr. Bond, who passed away at 91 in June 2017, and also marks the 60th anniversary of the “Paddington” series. Original picture book and comic drawings from a diverse array of artists such as Peggy Fortnum, famous for her illustrations in the children’s books series can be viewed along with versions of the series published around the world. A rare look at Mr. Bond’s working tools, and interview videos, featured at the exhibition, give us a glimpse into the wonderful world of Paddington, which is loved by everyone, regardless of age, gender, and nationality.
